Hengifoss Waterfall

Hengifoss, standing at approximately 128 meters, is one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland and a true gem of the island’s eastern region. Beyond its breathtaking cascade, Hengifoss is renowned for its striking geological features.
Towering cliffs surround the waterfall, showcasing vividly layered basalt rock interspersed with red clay strata, a result of iron oxidation, revealing a geological history that spans millions of years.
The hike to Hengifoss is an adventure in itself. The 2.5-kilometer trail from the parking area leads visitors through scenic terrain, with panoramic views and a stop at another geological marvel (Litlanesfoss).
This smaller waterfall is framed by magnificent hexagonal basalt columns formed from ancient volcanic activity.
